Gift idea time! Here’s a story of a
great gift to spark your creativity

The “pooling funds" Gift:

On our honeymoon, my husband knew I had fallen in love with a coat we found in Scotland. It was too expensive, impractical to travel with, and just not something we could buy at that time. He made note of the coat and when he got home, he got with my in-laws and my parents and they all pooled their money to buy me the coat for a Christmas present. The kicker? This was before websites really existed, so he had to call and work with the store and hope he got the right coat! 25 years later, it is still one of my most favored travel mementos.

Why this gift is great

  • Prioritizes the gift-recipient’s happiness over anything else

  • Helps check off mutual gift-recipient’s from other people’s gift lists too

  • Unlocks better gift-giving opportunities that you couldn’t pursue alone

  • The additional effort to coordinate multiple parties and make this gift happen make it extra thoughtful and meaningful

Brainstorming your version of this gift

📕BGC Playbook for Pooling Funds Gifts:

  1. Identify their dream gifts - Pay attention to potential gifts on their wish list that are out of the reach of your resources alone. You can even just help everyone (the gift-recipient & other potential group gift-givers) by being like my mom and just asking them to identify their dream gifts

  2. Find collaborators - Identify & reach out to potential contributors to the gift and gauge their interest in combining resources to make this gift happen. Eventually, you’ll have to solidify those contributor commitments.

  3. Make it happen with transparency - Take the lead in seeing this gift to the finish line. This will likely have you collecting money, buying, receiving, and wrapping the gift. You should also be regularly communicating your progress with all of the contributors to put their minds at ease.

  4. Give credit - Ensure anyone who contributed receives credit for their contribution

Because I think group gifts are awesome, here are other great, MOSTLY FREE, group gift ideas in which the parties contribute something other than money:
