THE GIFT STORY

šŸŽTHE GIFT:

The ā€œgift cardā€™s fun cousin" Gift

Gift cards are generally practical, but boring gifts to give. As their gifts, my nieces & nephews often ask for gift cards. It makes sense ā€“ their generation doesnā€™t shop in-person (so cash isnā€™t all that useful) and they donā€™t have credit cards to make online purchases. Iā€™m happy to get them what they wantā€¦but I came up with a plan for maintaining my identify as a fun uncle (funcle) by ordering them personalized Visa gift cards. In addition, instead of having them unwrap the gift cards, Iā€™m going to shove them into balloons for them to pop.

This is one of my own ideas/brainstorms

šŸŒ® WHY THIS GIFT IS GREAT:

  • Practical, but fun

  • Gift cards are easy to ship

  • Visa gift cards are more liquid than a specific retailerā€™s gift card

  • Transforms traditionally ā€œthoughtlessā€ gift into a very thoughtful one

  • Gift cards were 2022ā€™s most popular gift (so making them better is meaningful)

  • Prioritizes getting recipients what they wantā€¦while injecting some additional fun

Itā€™s only $4 to add my sonā€™s photo to a gift card? Yes, please!

šŸ§GIFT-GIVING GUIDING PRINCIPLES:

For anyone thinking ā€œI donā€™t like giving gift cards because it feels like trading money or that itā€™s less thoughtfulā€ ā€“

Hopefully, todayā€™s edition helps alleviate those concerns, but know that I can totally relate to this feeling. When I feel that these notions are influencing my gift-giving decision, I do my best to stick to this gift-giving guiding principle:

When gift-giving, prioritize giving someone what they want over what you want to give them.

Ā

šŸš€PUTTING THE GIFT IDEA INTO ACTION:

  • Who on your gift list is graduating this year?

  • Who on your gift list typically asks for gift cards?

  • If you were to order them a personalized gift card, what image/message would you use?
