Gift idea time! Here’s a story of a
great gift to spark your creativity

The “keepsake restoration" Gift:

My grandmother gave me an old hymnal from her church because she knows I love hymns. On my way home, I had to slam on the brakes and the hymnal flew off the seat and its cover completely tore off from the pages. I was devastated! But for Christmas, my husband did some research and found this place in Wisconsin called Grimm Book Bindery that could repair my hymnal! He gave me a little homemade gift certificate letting me know what the gift was for, with all the info about Grimms. I was able to get in touch with them and they helped me decide exactly what kind of restoration I wanted for my hymnal! It was so sweet and now my hymnal will last for many, many more years to come.

Why this gift is great

  • Preserves a piece of family history for future generations

  • High likelihood of being a great gift when you restore something they already love

  • Allows for personal preferences - note how the husband let Karlyn choose the type or restoration she wanted

Brainstorming your version of this gift

BGC Playbook for Keepsake Restoration Gifts:

  1. Do an audit of their most loved/cherished keepsake items and consider if they could use some refurbishing or repurposing.

  2. Conduct research into how to get them restored or repurposed

  3. Consider if you should include your gift recipient in the process (such as Karlyn’s husband did)

  4. Take before an after pictures to appreciate the restoration or repurposing

Ways to find restoration vendors:

  • Online research

  • Antique stores and dealers may have connections to restoration experts or may offer these services themselves

  • Online forums and communities. Reddit.com/r/restoration/ is a community for anyone seeking restoration help, wanting to show off their restoration projects, or anything in between.
